I want to practice the skills my instructor has passed onto me

You’ve made the decision to learn to drive. You have applied for and received your provisional driving licence. You have found a professional driving instructor and started taking lessons. You now want to practice the skills and manoeuvres your instructor has passed onto you. This may not be as easy as you think...

The problem learners have

Gaining the recommended private practice time can be hard. The main problem is getting access to a car other than your driving school’s. Due to a learner driver’s lack of experience behind the wheel there is a reluctance by friends and family members to lend learner drivers their cars. The main reasons are the substantial additional premiums and should the learner driver be involved in a fault accident the car owner will lose their hard earned No Claims Bonus. You may also have to pay an increased excess.

The solution

The National Learner Driver Insurance policy. This is a fully comprehensive policy in the name of the learner driver. The car owner has the security of knowing that should the learner being supervised in their car be involved in a fault accident, it’s the National Learner Driver Insurance that will be in force. This policy protects any existing No Claims Bonus the car owner may hold. The NLD Insurance policy operates separately to any existing motor policy on the vehicle; it also removes the expense of adding an additional learner driver to the car owner's main policy.

The National Learner Driver Insurance policy meets the Road Traffic Acts legal requirements in that anybody in charge of a vehicle on a public highway must be covered by a current insurance policy. When you are having lessons from a professional instructor they will make sure you are insured while using their car; if you are practicing in a family members or a friends car, you will need to be a named driver or take out learner driver insurance.
